Beyond Is Coming for the Entire Protein Category

The company formerly known as Beyond Meat is betting big on America’s protein obsession.

Beyond the Burger Aisle

Beyond has unveiled a new product portfolio called Phytosphere, combining its recently launched sparkling protein beverages with new protein powders and savory bars.

The lineup includes Starmatter, a protein powder with 20 grams of plant protein and 5 grams of fiber per serving, available in flavors such as vanilla, salted caramel, and strawberry banana. There’s also Starcut, a protein bar made with plant-based jerky and mycelium that packs 17 grams of protein.

And because Beyond isn’t leaving burgers behind, it’s also launching Beyond Veggie, a veggie burger made with more than 10 fruits and vegetables.

Everyone’s Talking About Protein

The move comes as protein has become one of the hottest buzzwords in food. Grocery aisles are packed with protein-fortified snacks, cereals, drinks, desserts, and nearly everything in between. Scroll through social media and you’ll find influencers encouraging followers to “protein-maxx” every meal.

But here’s the thing: Most people are already getting more than enough protein.

According to nutrition experts, protein deficiency is uncommon in the United States, and most adults meet or exceed their daily protein needs.

Yes, Vegans Get Enough Protein

While products like Beyond’s new bars, powders, and drinks may appeal to people looking for convenient ways to boost their protein intake, vegans don’t need specialty products to get enough nutrients.

Beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, seitan, chickpeas, nuts, seeds, oats, and whole grains all contain protein. In fact, many staple vegan foods are naturally rich in protein while also providing fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that animal flesh, eggs, and dairy lack.

That’s something often lost in the current protein craze. The question isn’t usually whether people are getting enough protein. It’s whether they’re getting enough of the foods that promote overall health.

Still, if Beyond’s latest launch helps more consumers swap animal parts for vegan foods, that’s a win for animals. After all, cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals exploited and killed for food are sensitive individuals who value their lives and relationships.

Inspired to Fuel Up With Kind Foods?

If Beyond’s latest launch has you inspired, you’re in luck. There are more vegan options than ever, whether you’re looking for a post-workout shake, a scramble without eggs, or a flesh-free burger.
