Meadowlark Trail Closed Sept. 7 – Nov. 7

Use detour along McCaslin Blvd. Coalton Trailhead and all other trails will remain open.

Boulder County, Colo. - A portion of the Meadowlark Trail will be closed for cattle grazing from Monday, Sept. 7, through Saturday, Nov. 7. All other trails and the Coalton Trailhead will remain open.

The trail will be closed during grazing out of an abundance of caution for trail users. This closure is intended to protect visitors, as cattle in this area have previously been protective of their young and aggressive toward trail users.

Grazing Benefits

Grazing is an important tool for maintaining healthy grasslands and reducing the amount of fuel available for fire. Wildfire risk reduction is especially important along the east side of the property near Superior neighborhoods. Grazing also benefits grassland-nesting birds such as the western meadowlark, Cassin’s sparrow, and burrowing owl.

Detour

Trail users can take the detour along McCaslin Boulevard. Please note, this is a different detour route than last year. From the Coalton Trailhead, the detour goes east through the roundabout at Coalton Road, north along the east side of McCaslin Boulevard, west at the crosswalk at Rock Creek Parkway, and north along the west side of McCaslin Boulevard to the Oerman-Roche Trailhead. Please use caution at the crosswalks. A video of the detour highlights the route.

Managing multiple uses on open space lands is challenging. Boulder County recognizes that trail closures are frustrating and inconvenient, but hopes the detour provides an acceptable accommodation.
