SAN JUAN COUNTY, WA June 15, 2026 – San Juan County is proud to recognize Juneteenth as National Independence Day. During the June 9 meeting, the County Council issued a proclamation recognizing and celebrating June 19 for its historical and cultural significance in the fight against slavery and racism.  

Additionally, County offices will be closed on Friday, June 19. Online services are available 24/7 at http://www.sanjuancountywa.gov. Offices will resume regular schedules on Monday, June 22. Please visit specific department pages for hours of operation.  

San Juan County’s proclamation recognizes the African American families and individuals who have helped shape our islands, contributing to our local culture, economy, and civic life despite generations of systemic barriers. From the Black Pioneers of the Victoria Rifle Company, to those who helped settle the Washington Territory, to those who hold positions of leadership in our community today, the islands have benefited from the contributions of Black and African Americans. 

During February, in celebration of Black History Month, on June 19th, and beyond, all residents, businesses, organizations, and visitors are encouraged to reflect on the meaning of freedom, to learn more about our collective history, and to celebrate the rich heritage and contributions of African Americans in our islands.
