Whatcom County Public Works crews, along with the Washington Conservation Corps and Sheriff’s Office work crews, will be installing additional protective fencing along the Birch Bay berm during the week of May 18, Monday through Thursday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Work will take place from the Beach Cat area north to just past Harborview Road, with possible additional fencing installed near Cottonwood Drive if time and materials allow. This work expands and connects existing fenced areas and includes extending fencing near Harborview to discourage the use of informal trails.

The fencing is being installed to help protect vegetation on the berm, which plays a critical role in preventing erosion and maintaining the berm’s structural integrity. Protecting this vegetation also helps reduce the risk of increased flooding in the area. This work is part of ongoing efforts to meet environmental permit requirements and ensure the long-term effectiveness of the berm.

During construction, visitors to the area can expect intermittent noise from installation work and reduced public parking in nearby areas.

How You Can Help

Community cooperation is essential to protecting the berm and the investment it represents. Please help by leaving fencing, signs, and restoration areas undisturbed:

• Steer clear of fenced areas and avoid walking on the berm crest
• Properly dispose of trash (do not leave bags or items next to full cans)
• Avoid the use of vehicles—including electric carts—on the berm
• Refrain from lighting fireworks, fires, or disturbing vegetation
• Do not plant vegetation or spread seeds without Public Works approval (non-native and invasive species can cause damage)
