Oklahoma wheat producers are pushing through a tough spring.

This week’s Oklahoma Wheat Crop Update shows just how uneven conditions are across the state. Eastern Oklahoma has received some needed rainfall, while much of western Oklahoma and the Panhandle continue to struggle with drought, heat, and wildfire concerns.

According to the latest USDA-NASS report, only 14% of Oklahoma wheat is rated good to excellent, while 45% is rated poor to very poor. Wheat maturity is also moving quickly, with 43% of the crop already headed.

OSU Extension Small Grains Specialist Dr. Amanda Silva and Oklahoma Wheat Commission Executive Director Mike Schulte say the crop is running two to three weeks ahead of schedule, with harvest in southwest Oklahoma possibly beginning around May 15–20 if weather allows.

Producers are encouraged to continue scouting fields, especially for true armyworm movement as wheat matures and larvae move into nearby young corn, sorghum and soybeans.

It has been a challenging year, but Oklahoma wheat producers continue to show resilience, patience and commitment as harvest approaches.
