LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo is affirming the state's commitment to all potential forms of energy production and transportation fuels with a new executive order.

The governor's office announced Monday that Lombardo signed a new order that outlines his energy policy objectives.

The order directs Nevada officials to develop a "robust, diverse energy supply portfolio" through all available means. That includes clean energy, such as solar, geothermal and wind, low-carbon sources like natural gas, and other existing power sources like hydroelectric and geothermal.

"Governor Lombardo’s energy policy objectives provide a critical framework for the future of energy in Nevada," Dwayne McClinton, director of the Governor's Office of Energy, said in a statement.

Lombardo's order calls for developing sufficient in-state electrical general to mitigate any risks that could develop in energy markets, while still allowing for Nevada to take part in a western energy market if it contributes to affordable and sustainable power.

It pushes for reducing regulations and streamlining the permitting process, including by having state agencies review applications at the same time, rather than sequentially.

It also states Nevada must continue to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pursue battery, hydrogen and other forms of energy storage technologies.

Nevada received more than 66% of its energy from natural gas in 2021, according to a report from the Governor's Office of Energy. Another 13.7% came from solar energy, followed by 9.4% from geothermal plants and 4.8% from coal.

About 86% of the fuel for energy that Nevada consumed came from outside of the state, per the report.
