Nebraska State Treasurer Joey Spellerberg highlighted some key measures passed by the Nebraska Legislature during this year’s session.

One of those measures passed was the First-Time Home Buyer Savings Account Act.

The bill was originally introduced on behalf of Spellerberg, who tells KRVN News it allows Nebraskans to begin saving in a tax-advantage account for a down-payment and closing cost on a first-time home.

The act passed the legislature with a 48-1 vote before it was approved by Governor Jim Pillen.

Nebraska lawmakers also unanimously passed LB1240, a bill that strengthens protections for the Enable Savings Plan, which serves those with disabilities.

Spellerberg also touched on the expansion of the Nest 529 program that was passed by state lawmakers.

Spellerberg was first appointed as treasurer in November 2025 after serving as mayor of Fremont from 2020 to his appointment.

He has officially filed for candidacy for the position as a Republican for the 2026 general election.

The only other candidate who has filed for the race so far is Democrat Daniel Ebers.
