If you have a worn or damaged American Flag and want to ensure that it is disposed of respectfully, you can bring it to a veteran-run flag collection Friday, June 12 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. outside the St. Charles County Government Administration Building.

The annual flag collection at the corner of North Second Street and Monroe Street in downtown St. Charles is hosted by the St. Charles County Veterans Best Practices Working Group. Collected flags are donated to the American Legion for final disposal. 

“Flags wear out over time—this drop-off is for flags that are out of shape and need to be respectfully retired,” says Sgt. Donald Van with the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department, chair of the Veterans Best Practices Working Group. “As an Army veteran, I take pride in flying the flag every day, and Flag Day (June 14) is a great reminder to check on the condition of your flag and make sure you have one in good shape.”

“Some people may not realize the importance of how a worn flag is retired,” Van says. “The American Legion properly and ceremoniously disposes of thousands of flags once a year. I ask you to bring your flag to us at our collection site so we can give your flag the respect it deserves.”

The collection is a drive-thru drop off, so you don’t need to leave your vehicle. Veteran volunteers will collect flags directly from the car. 

Anyone who can’t make it to the collection on June 12 can drop flags in designated collection boxes anytime. The boxes are outside the County Administration Building (201 N. Second Street in St. Charles) and at Veterans Tribute Park (1031 Kisker Road in Weldon Spring). 

St. Charles County’s Veterans Best Practices Working Group was established in 2014. The group exists to promote a veteran-friendly employment environment for those who have served in the United States military, to encourage businesses in the community to develop similar veteran-friendly practices, and to inform veterans seeking employment of available opportunities with the County Government.
