TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The State Emergency Response Team (SERT) and Volunteer Florida encourage prospective donors who would like to assist Floridians impacted by the severe storms and flooding in north Florida to make cash donations with established disaster relief organizations.

“Supporting established and reputable relief organizations is a great way to assist those who have been impacted or displaced by the flooding in north Florida,” said State Coordinating Officer Bryan W. Koon. “Cash donations are the best way for these organizations to help survivors return to normal as quickly as possible.”

“As the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend areas continue to experience flooding, we ask those Floridians who want to help to make cash donations to established disaster relief organizations in order to most efficiently assist their neighbors in need,” said Chester Spellman, Volunteer Florida CEO.

Volunteer Florida offers the following tips on how to wisely help survivors:

CASH – Financial gifts are the best way to immediately help survivors. Donate to an established relief organization. For a complete list of established relief organizations, visit: http://www.volunteerflorida.org/about-foundation/disaster-relief-agencies/.

CONFIRM – A community hit by disaster does not have the time, staffing or money to dispose of unneeded donated goods.  Confirm with the local community what items are needed before collecting and delivering.

CONNECT – Contact a local relief agency or local volunteer center for volunteer opportunities.  Please do not self-deploy, because it places an additional burden on the impacted area.
