What To Do If You Find a Litter
During kitten season in Miami-Dade County, it’s common to come across litters of kittens outdoors. While your instinct may be to pick them up right away, the best first step is to pause and observe.

In many cases, their mother is nearby searching for food. Separating kittens too soon can disrupt their best chance at survival. A mother cat provides the nutrition, warmth and protection they need in these critical early weeks.

If you find a litter, watch from a safe distance for at least 24 hours. If the kittens appear clean, quiet and sheltered, it’s likely mom is caring for them.

However, if you are certain the kittens are orphaned, sick or in immediate danger, you can step in to help.

Ready to Help?

Provide Temporary Care
If kittens truly need assistance, you can provide short-term care until they are old enough for adoption. Miami-Dade County Animal Services offers a Kitten Care Guide and, when available, Kitten Care Kits with essential supplies. For those who want to feel more confident caring for vulnerable kittens, Miami-Dade Animal Services also offers Kitten College, a monthly training session (available in person and via Zoom) that covers neonatal kitten care, bottle-feeding basics and care from birth through weaning.

Spay/Neuter
Once kittens reach two months of age or weigh about two pounds, they should be spayed or neutered before finding their forever homes. This helps prevent future litters and reduces pet overpopulation in our community.

By pausing first and responding thoughtfully, you can ensure kittens receive the care they truly need, while respecting their natural family bond.

Thank you for being a compassionate and responsible member of our community.
