Sweden to host international conference on civil defence
Published
In early 2026, Sweden will host an international high-level conference on the future of civil defence. The conference will be held in Stockholm and organised together with the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
“It is essential that Europe takes on a greater responsibility for its security, and a key part of that is to make our societies more resilient. The challenges ahead of us are shared, and thus we should also work together to find the solutions. In addition, hosting this conference enables for Sweden to inform and share knowledge about the Swedish total defence concept,” says Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin.
The Government has tasked the Swedish Defence Research Agency with planning and organising the conference together with the IISS, an international research institute focused on global security. The aim of the conference is to discuss the development of civil defence in Europe and strengthen cooperation between various countries and actors. Current and future challenges for civil defence, civil-military cooperation, technological development and the role of industry and the business sector will be on the agenda.
On October 22, Johan Berggren, State Secretary to the Minister for Civil Defence, visited Hamburg to take part in the Global Security and Defence Innovation Summit, where he announced the upcoming conference in his address.
