Alton, NH – On Saturday, June 29 at approximately 6:00 p.m., NH Fish and Game Conservation Officers were notified of a hiker in distress who had lost her glasses and was off trail on Mount Major. NH911 was able to pinpoint her location with GPS coordinates and relayed that information to rescue personnel. At approximately 6:50 p.m., Alton Fire and Rescue responding on their 6 x 6 Utility Vehicle and made contact with the hiker in the woods approximately 400 feet away from the Blue Trail, which was about a ¼ mile from the peak. The hiker was identified as 28-year-old, Grace Diehl of Cambridge, MA. Alton Fire and Rescue then called off all additional resources requested since they were able to locate and ultimately extract Diehl by UTV.

After a quick interview when she was returned to the trail head parking lot, it was discovered that Diehl dropped her glasses off the edge of a cliff and scrambled down to get them but and could not find them. She then attempted to locate the trail, and started to descend one she came upon. She then quickly realized she was not on the same trail she originally ascended and decided to call for assistance.

New Hampshire Fish and Game would like to remind hikers to always be prepared and plan for the unexpected. Before your next hike, visit hikesafe.com.
