Chinook at MK Nature Center for Viewing
Twelve chinook salmon arrived at MK Nature Center on July 15th. These fish were delivered by the staff at Rapid River Hatchery and placed in the outdoor alpine lake viewing window (under the big waterfall) for your viewing pleasure. Take this opportunity to see one of Idaho's most amazing fish up close and personal, as they spawn and die here at MK Nature Center over the next few months. Active spawning behavior can be seen such as digging nests (redds), pairing, laying eggs and males defending their females. These hatchery fish were released from Rapid River in 2019 or 2020 and traveled to the Pacific Ocean. They returned to the hatchery for spawning and some were used to stock Idaho's rivers for exciting angling opportunities. The MK Nature Center path that leads you to view these fish is open dawn to dusk everyday.
