BANGKOK, Thailand (ILO news) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) was presented with an ‘Outstanding contributor’ award by Thailand’s Social Security Office (SSO) in recognition of the work done to strengthen and promote social security in Thailand.

At the event celebrating the 33rd anniversary of the Social Security Office, held at the Headquarters of the Social Security Office in Nonthaburi, on 3 September 2023, the "Outstanding contribution to the Social Security Office’s work on social protection” award was accepted by Simon Brimblecombe, Chief Technical Adviser of the project “Strengthening Social Security Office capacities in policy design with a focus on research and actuarial services”. On behalf of the ILO he thanked the SSO, and emphasised the excellent collaboration and cooperation between the two organizations in their goal of strengthening and developing social security in Thailand.

“The ILO is greatly honoured to receive this award,” he said. “It recognises the contribution this project is making to strengthening social security in Thailand, but also previous work undertaken by the ILO. The project is a pioneering and innovative undertaking which shows the importance of the strong technical support that the ILO can provide, for example in managing and carrying out actuarial valuations. It also demonstrates the need for such projects to build capacity within the social security system”.

The ILO’s contribution includes the training and development of SSO staff, improvements in communication and reporting, and activities which promote social security in the country such as media briefings and ‘Social Security Days’ for workers and employer representatives. This work ensures that decisions made on reforms, policy and financing are evidence-based, and leaves a strong legacy in improved capacity within the SSO.

The project builds on a long history of social protection work undertaken by the ILO in the support and promotion of social security in Thailand. “This award also recognises the results of previous ILO social protection work. We have been providing technical assistance and collaborating with the SSO for over 25 years. As reiterated by Secretary General Boonsong Tapchaiyuth, the commitment to sustaining these collaborative endeavours will strengthen Thailand's social security system so that it remains a pioneer in the region,” added the Chief Technical Adviser.

The project is financed by the SSO. “We thank the Board of the SSO for their confidence in the ILO”, continued the Chief Technical Adviser. “It shows the increasing importance of social protection in sustainable economic development in the region”.

In its four years of operation so far, the project has delivered a number of technical reports including actuarial valuations, support for investment governance processes, advocacy for the extension of coverage and support for reforms. The ILO team also includes Sasachol Kruawan, National Project Coordinator, and Issaree Sukpornsintham, Finance and Administrative Assistant, with additional support from Jittima Srisuknam, Senior Programme Officer.
