Summit Point Motorsports Park, West Virginia, November 1, 2011 -- On 11/11/11 Veterans and active duty military members from across the region, including those on leave from the war in Afghanistan have registered for the first annual Helmets off to Heroes driving event by Miriam Schottland and Drive-Lab, to be held this Veteran's Day.

Registered drivers will receive individual driving instruction by the area's top driving instructors while testing their skills on the skid pad [pictured left], and the braking and slalom courses. After lunch these national heroes will hit the open track for an afternoon of high performance excitement. Timid and first time track attendees need not fear. Previous driving student Mark F. of North Carolina said "[Miriam] definitely makes an impression on first time track drivers. Really passionate about sharing the knowledge she's gained and trying to make the roads safer." And Sheik A. of Virginia said "Miriam has more knowledge of driving in her noggin than anyone should be allowed to have."

Helmets off to Heroes is also open to injured and Wounded Warriors who cannot drive. Wounded Warriors will be treated to rides on the open track in the afternoon and can partake in the wheelchair race as well. Registration for Wounded Warriors is open until October 30th, but space is limited so register early if you would like to attend. All drivers, wounded warriors, and their family's will enjoy the many other attractions the day has to offer, including a band, therapeutic pets for adoption, great comradery and delicious food to name a few.

Miriam Schottland always wanted to be a fighter pilot, but when she was growing up women were not allowed to do such things. Instead she became an illustrator, and after many awards she found the Society of Illustrators had an affiliation with the Air Force. She was offered an opportunity to travel to Vietnam during the conflict. She went as an artist, but pursued her desire to be a fighter pilot and flew with the US Air Force in F-4s, F-105s, B-52s and numerous others, including flights with the Vietnam Air Force. Miriam's Paintings from that memorable trip hand in the E Ring at the Pentagon.

Upon returning from Vietnam Miriam discovered her love of driving, which she says "has the same physics as flying." After working at an advanced driver training facility for 18 years she developed Drive-Lab on the premise that driving is applied physics.

She used this program to teach counter-terrorism, accident avoidance, high-performance driving and racing to; the FBI, DIA, AAA, the state department, military, police departments and numerous drive clubs including; BMW, the Corvette Club, Mazda, and the Porsche Club to name a few. Miriam has been called "a force of nature … [whose] major contribution to the general driving community in the area is legendary." (Tony K. VA). Driving and the service and sacrifice of our military men and women are the two things closest to Miriam's heart. With Helmets off to Heroes she is bringing them together to honor America's heroes with her first love, driving.
