TBI Agents Investigating Perry County Shooting

At the request of 32nd Judicial District Attorney General Hans Schwendimann, TBI special agents continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a man during an interaction with deputies from the Perry County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. at a car wash in the 700 block of Highway 13 as deputies responded to a call of a man slumped over in a truck. During the interaction, the man in the vehicle reportedly fired a shot, resulting in one deputy returning fire. The man sustained a gunshot wound, but it wasn’t immediately clear if it was the result of the deputy firing upon him or if it was self-inflicted. He remained hospitalized at the time of this release. No law enforcement officers were hurt in the incident.

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney general for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the district attorney general requesting TBI’s involvement.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.

Any available updates on this investigation will be posted online at
