Bismarck, N.D. – Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus released the 2022 annual and fourth quarter taxable sales and purchases reports.

2022 Annual Taxable Sales and Purchases
Calendar year 2022 taxable sales and purchases totaled $23.9 billion, a 17.7% percent increase, from the $20.3 billion total in 2021.

“The nearly 18 percent increase in taxable sales and purchases for the year  illustrates a strong, post-pandemic business recovery across the state and a return to more normalized conditions following a particularly challenging year in 2021,” Kroshus said. 

Of the 15 major industry sectors, 14 reported an increase in taxable sales and purchases when compared to 2021. Most notably, the Wholesale Trade sector increased by $1.5 billion (a 37.5% increase), the Mining and Oil Extraction sector increased by $674.7 million (a 43.5% increase), and the Retail Trade sector had an increase of $410.4 million (a 5% gain).

“The state’s overall economy performed extremely well throughout the year, despite supply chain issues and inflationary headwinds. Favorable commodity pricing in both energy and agriculture, our state’s top two industries, led the way and had a positive impact on our economy as a whole,” said Kroshus.

The annual report includes data for the largest 200 cities in North Dakota and all 53 counties.

Of the 200 largest cities in North Dakota, the highest percent increases for 2022 (compared to 2021) were as follows:

• Saint Thomas – Increase of 89.3%
• Westhope – Increase of 78.8%
• Buxton – Increase of 76.1%
• Napoleon – Increase of 74.9%
• Golden Valley – Increase of 62.5%

North Dakota’s largest cities saw the following percentage changes when compared to 2021’s annual report:

• Williston – Increase of 29.2%
• Dickinson – Increase of 13.3%
• Minot – Increase of 10.4%
• Fargo – Increase of 5.1%
• Grand Forks – Increase of 4.7%
• Bismarck – Increase of 3.7%

Counties with the highest percent increases for 2022 (compared to 2021) were as follows:

• Logan – Increase of 66.8%
• Dunn – Increase of 40.7%
• Pembina – Increase of 36.3%
• Nelson – Increase of 34.2%
• Traill – Increase of 33.8%

2022 Fourth Quarter Taxable Sales and Purchases

Taxable sales and purchases for October, November and December 2022 totaled more than $6 billion, an increase of more than 17%.

The fourth quarter report includes data for the largest 50 cities in North Dakota and all 53 counties. Of the 50 largest cities in the state, the highest percent increases (compared to the fourth quarter of 2021) were Cavalier, Mayville, New Town, Kenmare and Tioga. Counties with the highest percent increases (compared to the fourth quarter of 2021) were Logan, McHenry, LaMoure, Traill and Nelson.

All 15 major industry sectors reported an increase when compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.
