CFO Patronis Statement on Passage of Fire Investigator Cancer Bill from House Appropriations Committee

2/17/2022

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Today, Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis issued the following statement on the House Appropriations Committee’s favorable hearing of House Bill 557, Fire Investigator Cancer Treatment Benefits, sponsored by Representative Salzman. House Bill 557 adds fire investigators to the existing firefighter cancer coverage. The bill moves next to the House Commerce Committee.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “Florida’s firefighters and fire service personnel face tremendous danger on the job, whether that is going into a burning building or being exposed to carcinogens that could ultimately lead to cancer. Our fire investigators play an important role in fire and arson related investigations and ensure arsonists are brought to justice. Both firefighters and investigators never fail to answer the call and work to protect our homes, businesses and communities at a moment’s notice. It is critical that we provide these men and women the support they need if faced with a life-changing cancer diagnosis. Thank you to Representative Salzman and Senator Wright for their hard work on House Bill 557 and Senate Bill 838.”
