Boehner Taps Livingood as House Sergeant at Arms
Washington
(Dec 14)
House Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-OH) today announced that he will nominate The Honorable Wilson “Bill” Livingood for a ninth term as Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives on January 5, 2011, the opening day of the 112th Congress.
Livingood has served as Sergeant at Arms since 1995, under three previous House Speakers, with overall responsibility for the safety and security of lawmakers, staff and visitors to the House of Representatives. In addition to leading his own staff in the Sergeant at Arms office, Livingood is one of three members of the Capitol Police Board which oversees the U.S. Capitol Police. The Sergeant at Arms also coordinates official protocol functions relating to visits to the Capitol by U.S. presidents, foreign heads of state and other dignitaries.
“ Bill Livingood has long been a disciplined and respected guardian of the U.S. Capitol and all who pass through these halls, ” said Boehner. “I’m pleased that we can continue to count on his leadership of the dedicated professionals under his direction.”
Livingood, a career law enforcement professional, said, “ I am deeply honored by the confidence that Speaker-designate Boehner has placed in me. I made the same pledge to him that I have made to his predecessors: nothing will ever be more important to me – or to the outstanding men and women on my team – than protecting Members of Congress and all those who serve here in the nation’s Capitol.”
A graduate of Michigan State University, Livingood served for 33 years in the U.S. Secret Service, rising to several of the agency’s most senior and sensitive positions. He is a resident of Alexandria, Virginia.
