Google asks for - and is granted - more time in controversial e-book deal

San Diego, California (CaymanMama.com) — Google asked for, and was granted, more time to produce a new proposal that would grant the technology giant the digital rights to millions of books that are no longer in print.

Now given until Friday, a federal judge approved the request on Monday in the latest change in the copyright lawsuit that has spanned some four years over Google’s controversial book-scanning project.

According to the Associated Press, “Google thought it had settled the dispute with U.S. authors and publishers more than a year ago. But the agreement still hasn’t won court approval because of concerns that the deal would give Google too much control over the digital book market.”

In September, Google made the decision to redo the deal after U.S. antitrust regulators strongly objected to the agreement.

The reworked proposition was supposed to be submitted by close of business on Monday, but Google got the extension for more time.
