Rite Aid issues flu-shot policy change for pregnant mothers
Detroit, Michigan (CaymanMama.com) — Rite Aid, the third-largest drugstore chain in the U.S., is issuing a flu-shot policy change which will effect pregnant mothers.
The change will no longer mandate that pregnant women produce a prescription to get their season and swine flu shots, said Rite Aid spokeswoman, Cheryl Slavinsky.
Expecting mothers currently have low vaccination rates. Some experts say this can be attributed to the fact that most obstetricians do not issue vaccinations, and because some pharmacists remain hesitant to administer the shots.
Public health officials are seeking to change those views. As set forth by the World Health Organization, pregnant mothers are now on the priority list for regular seasonal flu and swine flu shots.
According to the Associated Press, “Rite Aid announced the change in policy Wednesday. Spokesmen for Walgreen Co. and CVS Caremark Corp. say their drugstores don’t treat pregnant women seeking a flu shot any differently than the general public.”
