What’s new at Google? Google Caffeine shakes things up

Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — The second largest update in the Google search infrastructure since the “Big Daddy” update in late 2005 - 2006, “Caffeine” was announced by Google to shake up the search industry.

In what Matt Cutts explains as “under the hood” changes, the users interface bears the same look. Caffeine is about the semantic changes relating to faster indexing and turning up with relevant search results. With Caffeine, Google becomes more powerful, more flexible and more robust.

Cutts explained, “Fundamentally its a rewrite of the system, In order to have a good search engine you have to crawl really well, index very well and serve it out fast. Good way to think about Caffeine is that it is essentially re architecting or rewriting a large chunk on how we index web pages. We have engineered it so regular users shouldn’t notice a difference. Power users might notice the change and that is why we opened to power users preview and welcome suggestions.”

Comparing it with Microsoft’s “Bing” update, the Caffeine update does not affect the user interface whereas Microsoft’s update to Bing has lots to do with UI changes.

Search results are not as much affected but Cutts says that with such big infrastructural changes, it is hard to make the results identical.

There are concerns of the SEO community about, as to what will be the effect of ‘Caffeine update’ on their client’s website?

While some power users believe that Google as become smarter in finding fake websites and it de-indexes them as it turns up with search results. Another power user commented that Google is placing emphasis on social pages, it is also sorting out social web pages that are spam.

The next generation architecture Caffeine Update was the first ever public announcement by Google. More so, before integrating it with the live search, Google has asked for opinions, comments and reviews from power users.
