“This afternoon, I was honored to meet with President Sergio Mattarella to express my gratitude for his invaluable leadership of Italy and on the global stage.

“We were very fortunate to hear President Mattarella’s great wisdom on global affairs, both in Europe and in Africa, including concerns about Russia and China’s growing involvement in both regions.  I reiterated our deep appreciation for Italy’s NATO partnership in Afghanistan and the assistance throughout the evacuation of our Afghan allies, as well as for Italy’s strong role in the upcoming COP26 climate summit.

“Under President Mattarella’s leadership, Italy has enjoyed stability at home and been a global leader in crushing COVID, in acting on climate and in being a positive international presence.  My city of San Francisco was honored by his visit in recent years, and it was a joy to visit him at the Quirinale Palace.”
