Austin – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) investigates every unemployment benefit claim to establish the identity of the claimant and to lock accounts that are determined fraudulent. To assist with this key function, TWC has updated its fraud/identity theft reporting portal. The new portal is optimized to better collect information from individuals who believe they have been the victims of identity theft. Immediate notification of potential identity theft through the portal will help TWC quickly lock down fraudulent accounts to block money going out to fraudsters. It will also provide confirmation that the potential identity theft report has been received and explain next steps individuals should take if they are the victim of identity theft.

The new fraud/identity theft reporting portal link is: https://apps.twc.state.tx.us/UiFraudSubmission/uifs/uifraud Individuals who receive correspondence from TWC about unemployment benefits for which they never applied, were advised by their employer that a claim was filed in their name, or who have other reason to suspect their identity has been used to apply for benefits fraudulently, should use this portal. Quick reporting helps stop fraud in its tracks.

Individuals who are confirmed victims of identity theft fraud are not liable for any benefits paid out using their stolen information. If the identity-theft victim needs unemployment benefits in the future, TWC will first verify his or her identity and then they will be able to apply for benefits.

All Texans should take steps to secure their identity online by practicing Internet security best practices. Treat your TWC account and all accounts like you would your bank account.
