Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after President-elect Biden nominated United States Circuit Judge Merrick Garland to serve as U.S. Attorney General and other top Department of Justice officials.

“President-elect Biden has selected a team of civil rights champions and brilliant legal minds who will help ensure that our nation’s promise of ‘equal justice under the law’ is not a privilege for the few, but a right for all.

“Judge Garland is a greatly respected jurist who embodies wisdom, judgement and dedication to justice for all Americans and who dedicated his life to upholding the Constitution.  He will bring outstanding legal acumen, judgement and command of the law to the Department of Justice, as he works to uphold the Constitution, protect the civil rights of all Americans and reverse the Trump Administration’s brazen, years-long politicization of justice.

“Personally and professionally, I also salute the appointment of Vanita Gupta, with whom the Democratic House has worked closely to defend the rights of all Americans.
