Gov. Gary Herbert Declares October 10th as Gail S. Halvorsen Recognition Day

As America geared up for the world war, Col Gail S. Halvorsen had a dream to fly as a young boy on a beet farm in Tremonton Utah. He later joined the Army Air Corps and trained with the Royal Air Force. After the word came in 1948 he was stationed in West Berlin on an operation called “Operation Vittles” delivering more than 2 million tons of supplies to the people. However, it was Halvorsen’s idea to airdrop candy to children, trying to create some sort of hope and joy for West Berliners and in doing so deeming him the “Berlin Candy Bomber”
