MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $38,336 grant to establish a statewide standard for law enforcement agencies to report seizures and forfeitures.

The Alabama Justice Information Commission, which is responsible for all rules and policies involving crime information in Alabama, will develop a plan on the seizure of property and reporting it to the commission. The report will establish regulations involving disposing the property.

“Our police and deputies work long and hard to enforce laws and keep our communities safe,” Ivey said. “Establishing these regulations will ensure that seizures related to crimes are done above board and without question.”

The plan will develop a database enabling the tracking of property from its seizure to its disposal. The regulations will also apply to all law enforcement agencies and prosecutors.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state from the U.S. Department of Justice.

“ADECA supports law enforcement in so many ways in Alabama and is pleased to assist with Gov. Ivey to provide guidance to law enforcement and prosecutors in Alabama,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
