High School Effort Registers 29,070 Students in Two Years

Charleston, W.Va.— Over the last 20 months, Secretary of State Mac Warner has led an effort to encourage eligible high school students to register to vote. And in just two school years, (2016-17 and 2017-18), the results of that effort have been amazing.

Working closely with all 55 county clerks, high school administrators, the State Board of Education, teachers and civic engagement groups like Inspire-WV, Young Democrats and Teenage Republicans, Warner announced today that there have been 29,070 high school students registered to vote since he has taken office. The November 6^th election will be the very first General Election that all of these students will be eligible to vote.

“It’s important that we encourage young adults to register and to vote. If we can get them voting early, they are more likely to vote in every election,” Secretary Warner said.

Over the last 20 months, Warner indicates that a total of 92,189 new voters have registered. The 29,070 high school students are included in that number.

“This is an incredible accomplishment considering the size of our state. I want to encourage every registered voter, especially those voting for the very first time, to get out and vote,” Warner said.

“Every voter registration application must first be approved and entered by the county clerk. They are the chief elections official in their county and they’re doing a great job,” he said.

Early voting begins tomorrow, October 24^th and lasts until Saturday, November 3^rd. Election day is November 6^th.

Warner wants to remind voters to bring a form of identification with them to vote. It does NOT have to be a photo ID. A person’s Voter Registration Card provided by their county clerk is accepted. Read more about West Virginia’s Voter Identification Law.
