Voter Registration for November 6th General Election is Now Closed
Voters Considered “Inactive” Are Still Eligible to Vote
Charleston, W.Va.— Voter registration for the upcoming November 6th General Election is now closed according to Secretary of State Mac Warner.
In-person and online voter registration ended Tuesday, October 16th. The online portal will not be reopened until after the November 6th General Election.
All registrations that were mailed will be added to the voter rolls so long as they were postmarked on or before October 16th.
Returning uniformed service members, Merchant Marines, individuals serving outside of the country in support of national security, and their spouses/dependents who missed the October 16th deadline to register to vote may still be eligible to do so. Contact your county clerk or the Secretary of State’s office to learn if you qualify for extended time to register in person.
According to Warner, there have been 92,189 new voters registered since he took office in January 2017. Of those new voters, there were 26,008 high school students registered.
“I am very proud of the partnership we’ve developed with our county clerks in implementing an aggressive program to register new voters throughout the state. We hope that keeping our voter rolls up-to-date and registering new voters will increase the general public’s confidence level in our election process,” Warner said.
To clarify a commonly confused fact, any registered voter whose registration status is “inactive” is still eligible to vote a regular ballot. “Inactive” voters have not been removed from West Virginia voter rolls. That registration status is merely a technical term that indicates the voter did not return a confirmation card sent due to an error with the address or name on file, or the voter has not voted in any election for at least the past four years.
All “inactive” voters will be made “active” after casting a ballot in any election. If a voter chooses not to vote, their status can be changed back to “active” by updating their registration after the election online at https://ovr.sos.wv.gov, or by submitting a voter registration form in the mail or in person to their county clerk at any time.
