Hoyer Statement on Abortion Bans in Alabama and Georgia

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Laader Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement on abortion legislation in Alabama and Georgia:

"In 1973, the Supreme Court recognized that women have a Constitutional right to make decisions about their own bodies when it comes to reproductive health.  The laws passed in recent days in Alabama and Georgia represent a direct assault on the Constitutional rights of women and their access to health care.    “These laws are part of a systematic effort by Republican lawmakers around the country to outdo each other with how restrictive they can be in taking away reproductive choice for women with the goal of undermining Roe v. Wade.  Outrageously, the Alabama bill bans abortion even in the cases of rape or incest and threatens to punish doctors who perform abortions with up to ninety-nine years in prison.  The Georgia law makes abortion illegal before many women even know they are pregnant.    “The Supreme Court's ruling in Roe v. Wade was not a political decision; rather, it was an affirmation of women’s fundamental right to choose whether or not to proceed with a pregnancy.  Those who continue to assault that right do so in contravention of the principles of individual liberty and personal responsibility upon which our Founders established our country.  These legislators are also putting women’s lives at risk by substituting their political views for the judgment of medical professionals and ignoring the wide range of circumstances that surround the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy.

“I will continue to fight for every woman’s right to make her own health care decisions and against this dangerous agenda.”
