The litter which messes up the terrain and water supply, the dead brush which invites fire, these are things one need not contribute to and which, in otherwise idle moments, one can do something about”

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, US, May 8, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On May 5th, in an effort to rid their neighborhoods of toxins and after discovering that cigarette butts are the world’s #1 littered item containing dangerous toxins, volunteers from The Way to Happiness (TWTH) Association Tampa Bay took to the streets in Clearwater’s Gateway Neighborhood to remove offending litter. For the past eight weeks TWTH volunteers have been ensuring no cigarette butt is left behind during their cleanups - almost 5,000 butts so far.

According to Clean Virginia Waterways, “[Cigarette butts] also present a threat to wildlife. Cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures who mistake them for food.” For the past eight weeks TWTH volunteers have been collecting trash every weekend ensuring no cigarette butt is missed out, with over 4300 of these toxic cigarette butts removed.

Not only affecting the animals themselves but also the environment, as per cleanupday.org, “One cigarette butt alone can contaminate 7 liters of water in one hour and studies show that about half of all animals that are exposed to the contaminated water get sick from the chemicals of cigarette butts.” Toxic arsenic, lead and other chemicals leach from the millions of littered cigarette butts into the water and oceans.

“The Way to Happiness volunteers have become highly aware of this issue and are stepping up to clean the neighborhood of the tiny toxic trash,” says Executive Director of The Way to Happiness, Tanja Cranton. “With that we are curtailing further harm to the ground water and wild life.”

In the chapter Safeguard and Improve your Environment of The Way to Happiness book, L Ron Hubbard wrote, “Care of the Planet begins in one’s own front yard. It extends through the area one travels to get to school or work. It covers such places as where one picnics or one goes on vacation. The litter which messes up the terrain and water supply, the dead brush which invites fire, these are things one need not contribute to and which, in otherwise idle moments, one can do something about.”

The Way to Happiness is one of nine humanitarian outreach programs sponsored by the Church of Scientology (http://www.scientology.tv) and is holding the next community cleanup this Saturday May 11th at 10AM.
