Hoyer Statement on the Trump Administration's Memo on Asylum Regulations

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration's memo seeking to establish regulations that would make it harder to seek asylum:

“America was founded as a place of refuge for those fleeing persecution, violence, and disaster. President Trump seems to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes America great, and his efforts to close our doors to the same kind of refugees who have built this country and made it stronger undermine our American ideals.    “This latest move will do nothing to address the humanitarian crisis on our border of the Trump Administration’s own making. It will neither reunite heartbroken parents with their frightened children, nor will it prevent other families from being separated. It is not a constructive step toward cooperation on addressing our border challenges; rather, it is a provocative step that will make it harder for Congress and the White House to do so.  Instead of taking steps that prevent progress, the President should work with Congress in a good faith effort to uphold U.S. law, which allows asylum requests; respect international law and obligations; and ensure that America lives up to its Founders’ vision.”
