Gazprom Neft implements Russia’s first ever digital oil-product quality-control and volume management system

Gazprom Neft has completed the first stage of implementing Russia’s first ever digital system for the ongoing quality control and volume management of oil products. All of the company’s filling stations are now connected to the system, as are 80 percent of its tank farms and bulk-fuel facilities, and all refineries. This oversight and control system is expected to be deployed across all assets in the company’s value chain by 2020 — including all of Gazprom Neft’s refining, logistics and retail facilities.

The system has been developed by Gazprom Neft specialists, and is based on Russian-produced components and software. A network of transducers installed throughout refining facilities, shipment terminals, storage facilities, refuelling complexes and filling-station pumps collects and transmits information online. Large volumes of data (“Big Data”) are processed in real time, using distributed-computing technology and machine learning — meaning actual data can be compared against any deviations from norm. Information-processing algorithms mean initial independent analysis can be undertaken and any deviations impacting efficiency throughout the value chain put forward for specialists to address.

A billion metrics are processed through Gazprom Neft’s Neftekontrol system every day. Once processed, these form the basis for the digital simulation of oil products’ movement and transportation. Thanks to this opportunity to identify and predict anything that could give rise to process deviations, the new system has doubled efficiency in accounting, as well as cutting product losses — in terms of both quality and quantity. Modern automation control technologies deliver full transparency throughout the supply chain, guaranteeing customers ongoing control over product quality.

Anatoly Cherner, Deputy CEO for Logistics, Processing and Sales, Gazprom Neft, commented: “We are making further improvements to the Gazprom Neft Neftekontrol system, which is expected to cover all facilities throughout the value chain by 2020. New technologies mean we can collect and process large volumes of data in real time, transforming business processes. Connecting up cutting-edge algorithms means we can deliver exponential improvements in efficiency and stability in producing and delivering finished oil products to customers, from start to finish.”

The Gazprom Neft Neftekontrol system means oil can be monitored at every stage — from its acceptance at refineries through to the shipment, intake, storage and despatch of oil products from tank farms, and delivery to end-consumers. Once complete, the full implementation of the Gazprom Neft Neftekontrol system will make it possible to collate and process data from more than 50,000 sensors, guaranteeing effective quality control for customers.

The Gazprom Neft Neftekontrol system is operated by the Gazprom Neft Downstream Efficiency Control Centre. Specialists at the Centre are responsible for controlling every technology involved in the value chain. The Centre’s work is directed at improving business efficiency through cutting-edge data-analysis technologies, predictive analysis and work with Big Data, to create a single and cohesive digital platform for managing efficiency.
