CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, US, January 10, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- With the US having almost as many marijuana smokers as there are cigarette smokers, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World (FDFW) Florida Chapter has taken on the task of raising awareness on the effects of this drug with the Truth About Marijuana seminar held on the 2nd of January at their headquarters in downtown Clearwater.

Attendees included teenagers who had been curious about the drug and others who had previously tried the drug and regret it. FDFW Florida promotes that drug dealers and the innocent circulate that marijuana is “not really a drug”, but in actual fact contains some 400 chemicals, including THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol) which creates mind-altering effects, and increases criminal behavior.

“Marijuana is one of the most abused drugs in the world. Some people think that since it is legal in some places, it must be safe,” said Julieta Santagostino, the President of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World Florida Chapter. “But your body doesn’t know a legal drug from an illegal drug. It only knows the effect the drug creates once you have taken it.”

In the “Truth About Marijuana”, one of the booklets disseminated by FDFW, the immediate effects of taking marijuana include rapid heart beat, disorientation, lack of physical coordination, often followed by depression or sleepiness. Some users suffer panic attacks or anxiety. Also, marijuana smoke contains 50% to 70% more cancer-causing substances than tobacco smoke and one cannabis joint could cause as much damage to the lungs as up to five regular cigarettes smoked one after another.

“Our passion is to bring out the true information about drugs to the youth, because they often don’t know the effects of these drugs or realize the consequences it can have on them physically and emotionally. We are dedicated to reaching the youth before the dealers do,” said Ms. Santagostino.
