Nursing Leadership Development Program Awarded $265,000 Grant from the Cambia Health Foundation

PITTSBURGH, PA – The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) has been awarded a $265,375, one and one-half-year grant from the Cambia Health Foundation, to help support the creation of a nursing leadership development program managed through the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA).

As part of HPNF’s commitment to advance the next generation of palliative care leaders, this grant will help develop and implement a Nurse Leadership Development Program, created by a task force on nurse leadership. After the initial pilot group of nurses covered by the grant who will participate in the content and development of the competency-based leadership curriculum, this program will serve as a future resource for nurses to advance their leadership in hospice and palliative care.

”One of our pillars of excellence is leadership, and we believe that palliative nursing leadership should be encouraged, developed, and recognized at all levels and aspects of palliative nursing, including clinical practice, management and administration, education, research, and policy,” said Sally Welsh, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Executive Officer of HPNF, HPNA, and the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC). “We are grateful to the Cambia Health Foundation, for their support of a program to enhance the leadership skills of hospice and palliative nurses across the nation.”

This grant will help support the HPNA Nurse Leadership Development Program, which will serve as a resource for nurses to develop a range of skills from early to executive level in nursing leadership. The program will be available to up to 15 members who apply, and if accepted, they will participate in an intensive one- and a half-year program to advance from local to regional and national leadership in hospice and palliative nursing. Additionally, this program will serve as a national resource for nursing leadership skill development earlier in the nursing education ladder across all nursing specialties.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to partner with the Cambia Health Foundation, who is recognized for their extraordinary promotion of leadership in the field of hospice and palliative care, and we could not be more excited to further expand leadership capacity in hospice and palliative nursing nationwide,” said Abraham Brody, PhD, RN, FAAN, FPCN, Chairperson of the HPNA Leadership Development Task Force. “We have been working on this project for over a year to develop the evidence and needs for the Leadership Development Program, and this pilot program will serve as the culmination of our efforts.”

The initial goal of the program is to launch the application process early this fall, and to launch the pilot HPNA Nurse Leadership Development Program cohort group of 15 participants and 5 faculty concurrently with the next Annual Assembly of Hospice and Palliative Care, held March 13-16, 2019 in Orlando, Florida.

“The Cambia Health Foundation purposefully invests in organizations working to improve the quality of life of patients and families dealing with serious illness,” said Peggy Maguire, president and board chair, Cambia Health Foundation. “We are honored to partner with HPNF in driving change that will transform people’s journey through the health care system.”
