In the run-up to his talk entitled “Spot and Process Modulation Technology to Reduce Cost of Goods (Cogs) for Biosimilar Development” SMi Group caught up with him to discuss industry developments and his upcoming presentation. From the answers provided, it is apparent that competitive pricing of biosimilar drugs will continue to be a major challenge for branded pharmaceuticals.
“Currently discounts may be up to 70% although also lower discount % have been reported. Price may even further decrease, when in similarity with small molecules clinical development, clinical development only involves phase I and no Phase III anymore. This will drive the development cost down considerably and consequently higher discounting may be applicable. Branded products may not be able to complete due to less optimal processes which were developed years ago using old technology.”
