Glavgosekspertiza approves construction of new wastewater treatment facilities at Gazprom Neft’s Omsk Refinery

A project for the construction of cutting-edge wastewater treatment facilities at Gazprom Neft’s Omsk Refinery has been approved by Glavgosekspertiza of Russia. The construction of new closed wastewater treatment facilities forms part of a comprehensive modernisation programme at the Omsk Refinery, being implemented by Gazprom Neft since 2008. One of the key objectives of this programme is reducing the environmental impacts of production as far as possible. Under a Decree from the Government of the Russian Federation the wastewater treatment project at the Omsk Refinery has been included in the federal plan of events for Russia’s Year of Ecology.

The project has been developed by Russia’s ONHP Oil and Gas Engineering Institute. Gazprom Neft’s investment in the construction of wastewater treatment facilities at its Omsk Refinery stands at RUB17 billion.

The new treatment facility will include an advanced multistage water treatment system involving mechanical, physical—chemical and biological treatments, as well as carbon filtration and ultra-violet disinfection. Thanks to this system up to 70 percent of water will be returned to the enterprise’s production cycle, reducing the burden on city wastewater treatment facilities. Full watertight integrity is guaranteed across all processes, preventing the emission of oil products into the atmosphere and allowing a 95-percent reduction in environmental impacts of the Omsk Refinery water treatment facilities on the air around.

The technological solutions built into the project will allow a 17-fold reduction in the total floor space allocated to wastewater treatment facilities at the plant, while increasing production capacity by 24 percent. The existing wastewater treatment facilities at the Omsk Refinery will be decommissioned.

Oleg Belyavsky, General Director of the Gazprom Neft Omsk Refinery commented: “A key priority in the comprehensive modernisation of the Omsk Refinery is the consistent reduction of environmental impacts from production. Introducing best practice in effective water consumption will take the plant to a new level in environmental safety. Cutting-ege technological solutions will allow transformational change in line with international ecological standards. These new wastewater treatment facilities will be among the most effective in the domestic oil refining industry and will strengthen the company’s leadership in this area.”
