NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, February 14, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Current Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera plays the role of the good cop with a big smile who travels everywhere throughout the world. His intention is to dismiss Sri Lanka from the international war crimes that were committed in May 2009 by the Sri Lankan Sinhalese army in the “No Fire Zone” that resulted in the death of over 145,000 innocent Tamils.

Mr. Samaraweera also served as foreign minister under former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and actively went around the world to justify the bombing and shelling of Tamil civilians. He gave excuses for the mass killing of Tamils and the raping of Tamil women by the Sri Lankan security forces. 

There are also concerns that Sri Lankan Foreign Minister is using this ploy to deceive the international community and to buy time with the UN Human Rights Council Mandated War Crimes to implement a probe co-sponsored by Sri Lanka. 

Sri Lankan President Srisena has asked the new US administration to dismiss the war crimes charges against Sri Lanka. In the last week, the Chairperson of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation Chandrika Kumaratunga said there is “no need for a war crimes probe.”

All of the Sri Lankan political leaders have deceived Tamils for the last seven decades. Now, with this war crime, the Sri Lankan leaders are asking for an extension from the UNHRC to deceive them as well.

It is important that the UNHRC take steps to move up and refer this war crime to ICC through UN security council.

Mr. Mangala Samaraweera will say anything to anybody to please others. In Washington, in February 2015, Mr. Samaraweera was asked a question by a George Washington University student. The student stated, “your president already rejected foreign judges and will not be allowed to be part of the war crimes investigation as you agreed with UNHRC resolution.” Mr. Samaraweera told the audience that was the President’s “Own Opinion.” Later, it was confirmed in Colombo that the President will “not permit any foreign judges to be part of the war crimes investigation.” This incident shows Mr. Samaraweera’s fraudulence.

During the same trip to Washington, Mr. Samaraweera secretly met a narrow-minded diaspora group called USTPAC in the morning. He promised this group that he will never reveal their secret meeting to anyone. However, that same afternoon, when he was answering a questions in regards to diaspora involvement, Mr. Samaraweera told the audience that he met the diaspora group (USTPAC) in the morning. Once more, this shows he is a dishonest man.

Last year, in the fall, Mr. Samaraweera gathered a few narrow-minded, publicity seeking and collaborating diaspora groups such as GTF, USTPAC, CTC and ATC in Washington, DC. The Sri Lankan Ambassador to Washington had provided expenses (airfare and hotel) for individuals of these groups, according to the popular Tamil Web News Tamil Win. Mr. Samaraweera sent these people on behalf of the so called diaspora to US State Department to ask Assistant Secretary Nisha Biswal to grant one more year of extension in UNHRC for the Sri Lankan war crime investigation. This shows Mr. Samaraweera is a corrupt man.


On February 8, 2017, Mr. Samaraweera said that “Sri Lanka [was] to give priority to constitution drafting over accountability mechanisms.” This is yet another lie to receive a one-year extension from UNHRC. The president has told Sri Lankans that there is no new constitution until the next election in 2020. It demonstrates that Mr. Samaraweera is not truthful.

These incidents all show that Mr. Samaraweera is working hard to dismiss the Sri Lankan war crimes.

We, as Tamils, ask the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and member states of UNHRC, not to trust Mr. Samaraweera. He thinks that he has successfully deceived Sri Lankan Tamils through his TNA friend Mr. Sumanthiran. Now is trying his best to deceive the UNHRC.

Tamils are still suffering from the Sri Lankan army occupation; Tamil youths and women are still sexually assaulted. The Tamils are still living in interim camps. Many white van abductions are taking place. There is no political settlement and accountability. A solution looks impossible when one considers the last seven decades.

The illegal Sinhalese settlers have taken control of everything in the Tamil homeland. This brings chaos and jeopardizes the Tamil culture, resulting in misery and economic suppression of the Tamil population.

The Tamil spokesman said that “The whole world is watching the credibility of the UNHRC. As former US Assistant Secretary Robert Blake said in a meeting that ‘If the UNHRC fails to give international justice to Tamils, everyone in the grieved world like Tamils, search for justice by taking arms’. Please listen to Mr. Blake and avoid these unfortunate measures by these suffering people, Mr. High Commissioner for Human Rights Hussein.”
