Work Thanks Hungary’s Defense Minister for Security Contributions

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12, 2016 — In a meeting at the Pentagon today, Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work thanked Hungarian Defense Minister István Simicskó for Hungary's contributions to important security missions, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Gordon Trowbridge said.

In a statement summarizing the meeting, Trowbridge said Work expressed gratitude to Simicskó for Hungary’s security contributions to the coalition countering the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, to NATO’s Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan and to peacekeeping efforts in the Balkans.

Budget, Modernization

The deputy secretary applauded Hungary’s efforts to increase its defense budget, Trowbridge said, and the Hungarian defense minister provided insight into his nation’s defense modernization efforts. The two defense leaders also discussed the evolving security situation in Europe, he added.

Following the meeting, defense officials attended the opening ceremony of a temporary Pentagon exhibit showcasing artifacts from the 1956 Hungarian uprising against the Soviet-backed government. The display is on loan from Hungary’s government until Nov. 3.

“Deputy Secretary Work and Minister Simicskó said that they look forward to continued strong security cooperation between Hungary and the United States bilaterally and through the NATO alliance,” Trowbridge said.
