Carter, Chilean Defense Minister Discuss Security Issues, Sign Agreement

WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2016 — Defense Secretary Ash Carter discussed a range of issues with his Chilean counterpart today on the sidelines of the 12th Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said.

Carter and National Defense Minister Jose Gomez discussed the U.S.-Chilean defense relationship and security issues including peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, and defense technology, Cook said in a statement summarizing the meeting.

“Secretary Carter noted Chile's leadership on gender integration, women, peace, security and LGBT issues in the armed forces,” the press secretary said.

At the end of their meeting, he added, Gomez and Carter signed a research, development, testing, and evaluation agreement that will expand cooperation between the two countries on defense technology.
