Peacekeeping E-Learning Provider Marks 1 Million Enrolments

International Student Body Includes Military, Police, and Civilian Personnel From 194 Countries

WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES, September 9, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Peace Operations Training Institute, a leading provider of peacekeeping training, recorded the 1 millionth enrolment in its peacekeeping e-learning training programmes on 8 September 2016.

There are approximately 142,000 military peacekeepers, police, and civilians currently serving on United Nations, African Union, and hybrid missions worldwide. Since 2008, POTI has developed and provided e-learning on peacekeeping to those serving on peacekeeping missions around the world, much of it at no cost to students. The Institute’s work has been welcomed by the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations.

Reflecting on POTI’s 1 millionth enrolment, Executive Director Harvey Langholtz said the Institute reached its million enrolment milestone by filling a clear demand for peacekeeping training. POTI plays a unique role in the peacekeeping training community by offering a 29-course curriculum in five languages, including courses on human rights, the protection of civilians, and principles and guidelines for peacekeeping operations. Langholtz also highlighted the Institute’s e-learning system, which combines high-tech elements to connect with a large audience and low-tech elements to reach individuals in the often challenging environment of peace operations.

“We measure success by serving one peacekeeper at a time,” Langholtz said. “In the beginning, I never expected to see one million enrolments. I remember in our second month of operation, we provided 19 enrolments, and I was very pleased with that. Now we provide 300 every day.”

The Institute maintains partnerships with international development agencies and nonprofit organizations, such as the United Nations Mine Action Service and the International Organisation of La Francophonie, along with ministries of foreign affairs. Langholtz said the Institute’s students were particularly responsible for reaching 1 million enrolments.

“Most of all, I thank the dedicated men and women deployed on peacekeeping missions who enrol in POTI e-learning and who serve in remote and dangerous areas to protect the civilian population and seek an end to conflict,” Langholtz said. “These are the individuals we serve at POTI and it is them I thank the most.”
