DELMAR, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, August 4, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Pope Inspires Civil Rights Walk for the Disabled
Pope Francis recently called upon people to stop shunning the disabled in a Newsmax story titled, “Pope Slams Culture of 'Perfect' People Shunning the Disabled”

The Jonathan Carey Foundation www.jonathancareyfoundation.org was established after the tragic death of young Jonathan Carey, who had autism and was only 13 when he was killed by his New York State caregivers who were supposed to care for him, not kill him. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/06/nyregion/boys-death-highlights-crisis-in-homes-for-disabled.html
The Jonathan Carey Foundation along with Tom Cavanagh who is walking from Delmar, NY to Washington D.C. want to thank Pope Francis for shining a light on this global severe problem, because it must be spoken of and finally addressed. People with disabilities are of no lesser value or importance than anyone else, made just like you and me, in the image of God. We agree, align with, and are inspired by Pope Francis’s call to action for society to change their thinking regarding people with disabilities. We must stop shunning the disabled.
It is important that I tell you about my first born son Jonathan who is not with me and our family now, but in heaven, because he was shunned and treated inhumanely. http://www.nytimes.com/video/nyregion/100000000849083/a-failure-to-protect.html Jonathan was a beautiful and happy baby and toddler, but was noticeably not developing as quickly as others early and was diagnosed with mental retardation at 19 months. The politically correct term now is developmentally disabled. It was a shock to us as it would be for any parent, but it did not matter to me, Jonathan was the most loving person I ever met and yet he was a young child. Jonathan’s amazing love came from above; although Jonathan could not speak he emanated God’s love. Jonathan loved God and people fulfilling Gods greatest commandments. Jonathan loved me and made me feel that I was valuable and important, more than any person on earth. As Jonathan grew up his love for me never diminished, he treated me like I was royalty. I thank God for Jonathan. Although Jonathan was primarily non-verbal he could say a few words one being Daddy. Many times Jonathan would say daddy, daddy, daddy and my heart would melt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gf4JxtSRygY
Jonathan would later be diagnosed with autism at the age of six and as loving parents we would do everything possible to help Jonathan to grow and prosper to what his full abilities could be. Three years later, both my wife Lisa and I decided to place Jonathan in a special school that was supposed to specialize in helping children with autism learn to toilet train, dress themselves and learn basic skills important in life. Our plan was to help Jonathan, love Jonathan, assist Jonathan and bring him home in a short time, but things went array. People we entrusted Jonathan to abused him, they neglected him and tortured him and severely damaged him. Jonathan was withheld food and meals for “behavior modification” when he simply did not put his shirt on. Jonathan was secluded or unlawfully imprisoned in his bedroom, made like into a prison cell for extended period of times. Jonathan was literally bruised head to toe with dozens of bruises all over his body. Jonathan’s toes across the top of both feet were raw where his skin was ripped off, where he must have been grabbed by both shoulders by staff and dragged along pavement.
It is important for you to visualize my precious son Jonathan in this state and understand that this type of treatment is happening right now in New York State and throughout the world to children and adults with disabilities because they are different, extremely vulnerable and in most cases cannot defend themselves. The horrors went on for a long time and witnesses never called 911 to seek emergency help for Jonathan. We found out later that the residential school named the Anderson School, now called the Anderson Center for Autism had a history of rampant abuse of children with autism. http://autismschoolabuse.com/Abuse_at_Anderson_School.html
Jonathan was shunned. Jonathan was ignored. Jonathan was not treated equally, he was discriminated against and treated horrifically by those that were supposed to assist and help him. Two and a half years later in a New York State Developmental Center called O.D. Heck Jonathan was suffocated to death at the age of 13 by his New York State employed caregiver. Jonathan’s life and horrific premature death speak today loud and clear and testify why we in society must do what is right and just and stop shunning the disabled. Jonathan is still speaking through the Jonathan Carey Foundation for great changes and equal rights for all of his friends with disabilities in NYS and throughout the world http://www.metro.us/philadelphia/bereaved-dad-battles-for-911-law-for-people-with-disabilities/zsJpha---4oSnjGxZ0qFUI/ . This is why we are compelled to bring the disabled and the fact that they are being treated “unequally” to everyone’s attention and seek federal assistance and justice for our most vulnerable.
The Jonathan Carey Foundation continues to speak out against the egregious discrimination and civil rights violations of denying people with disabilities 911 emergency services when they are victims of crimes or in medical distress https://www.yahoo.com/news/cuomo-administration-blocks-civil-rights-york-says-jonathan-135500938.html . The Jonathan Carey Foundation through the “Civil Rights Walk for the Disabled” to Washington D.C is about being a voice for the voiceless and defenseless http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/governor-cuomo-fails-disabled-leaving-them-out-and-behind-300306218.html?tc=eml_cleartime . Jonathan’s short life here and all he suffered and ultimately died for was to help others. Critical changes must occur in New York State and we believe throughout our great country and we must change the way we are thinking about and treating our most vulnerable disabled. We cannot continue to shun and ignore them, they are precious and equally valuable and minimally deserve the same equal rights, equal privileges and “equal protections of laws” promised everyone in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Stand with us for “equal rights” and “civil rights” for people with disabilities in New York State and throughout the world by signing our petition at www.jonathancareyfoundation.org.
