GAACC Supports Mayor’s Delegation to Asia

The Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce (GAACC) is accompanying Austin Mayor Steve Adler’s business delegation to Asia.

AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA, July 1, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce (GAACC) is accompanying Austin Mayor Steve Adler’s business delegation to Asia that includes stops in Korea, China, Singapore and Taiwan. The delegation arrives in Seoul on July 5, beginning the fifteen day, four nation trip to explore trade and business opportunities as well as share best practices in transportation and affordability. The stops reflect Austin’s relationships with sister cities (Gwangmyeong and Taichung), science city partners (Singapore), and UNESCO creative cities (Shanghai).

GAACC board chairman, Paul Kim has been the main organizer for meetings that will take place in Korea, while board member Ying McGuire has made most of the connections in Shanghai, and the program in Singapore and Taiwan have been facilitated by partners formed from GAACC’s previous trips to Asia.

“This delegation is a special achievement for GAACC. The fact that Mayor Adler chose to go to Asia as his first international delegation with local businesses reflects on the economic importance of that region and the growth of Asian American community in Central Texas,” said Mr. Kim. “Korea and Austin have such a unique relationship with each other, anchored by Samsung’s continuing investments here, the success of K-Pop during SXSW, and prior visits from the Mayor of Gwangmyeong to Austin. GAACC has hosted many guests from other Asian countries so it is great that our Mayor is reciprocating to show that we appreciate our partnerships with all these cities.”

GAACC’s executive director, Marina Bhargava agrees. “Relationships in Asia take time to develop as they are built on trust and we are able to leverage the connections that we have fostered over the years. As we assist these countries to promote export opportunities to local businesses, we are also looking forward to meeting with several manufacturing companies that might bring jobs that are accessible for lower skilled job seekers. And while this trip is focused on eastern Asia, we look forward to visiting South Asian countries soon, starting with Pakistan in November as part of the ATX+PAK program.”

In addition to Mayor Adler, First Lady Diane Land, Mr. Kim, Ms. McGuire, and Ms. Bhargava, the members of the delegation include the City’s International Program Manager Casey Smith, and eleven local businesses that are looking to expand or export to Asia. Although this is an official visit, Mayor Adler and the First Lady are self-funding their costs.

GAACC is a non-profit member based organization that educates, advocates for, and connects people to the Asian Pacific American business community in Central Texas. www.AustinAsianChamber.org
