Have you ever had less than desirable bonding results with your flatbed laminating equipment? Regardless of what you are laminating, some part of the process will require thermal activation. These thermally activated components can be in the form of web, film, granules or fibers. The end use of the product determines your choice of adhesive. Choosing the proper lamination equipment is equally important.

Individual Silcurv® Heating for Precise Temperature Control

Glenro’s Silcurv® heating element is especially designed for non-rigid substrates. The unique design ensures that the heater surface is uniformly heated eliminating any “cold” spots. State of the art temperature control modules and proprietary software maintain precise temperature control throughout the laminator. Controlling element temperature in this way insures quick response when laminating high density products that consume large amounts of energy.

It is equally important to control temperatures and resin flow when using light weight substrates such as scrim. By eliminating temperature overshooting the adhesive resins remain in a controllable viscosity. When element temperatures are too high the adhesive becomes fluid. When the adhesive is fluid you lose control of the flow, and the adhesive can run through the face or back of the substrate. Ideally the adhesive resin should retain a viscosity similar to toothpaste. At this viscosity, the adhesive will anchor itself equally in both layers of the substrates.

Silcurv® Sine Wave Pattern Delivers Even Heat and Adhesion

Each Silcurv® heater has a slight radius that comes in contact with the laminator belts. We stagger the Silcurv® elements in the machine in a face up, face down pattern. Mounting the elements in this manner provides equal heat from the top and bottom. Glenro’s unique Silcurv® element mounting system compensates for unevenness in the substrates and heat expansion. Since each element has a slight radius, this curvature forces the substrates to come into contact with the entire face of each individual element. Only the conveyor belts come between the substrates and the heat source.

Mounting elements in this configuration creates a sine wave pattern. This method of contact heating is a very efficient way to convey the heat to the product and soften the adhesive resin. Products travel to the laminator via a lower belt, and the top belt covers them. As the products pass through the heating zone there is gentle and controllable pressure applied by belt tension and the amount of tension applied by the upper bed of heaters. You can adjust bed pressure mechanically or by selecting the optional auto bed pressure feature at the HMI.
