New mini-review published in Frontiers in Microbiology gives insight.

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, April 6, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) announces the publication of a new mini-review by Hanan Polansky and Adrian Javaherian. The mini-review identifies the economic principles underlying three biological systems, microRNAs, receptors, and latent viruses. The mini-review is entitled “3-Econsystems: MicroRNAs, Receptors, and Latent Viruses; Some Insights Biology Can Gain from Economic Theory.” The mini-review was published on March 23, 2016 in the leading medical journal, Frontiers in Microbiology.

Concerning all three systems discussed in the mini-review, the authors wrote that “all three include competing molecules and a limiting molecule that binds the competing molecules. Such systems are extensively researched by economists. In fact, the issue of limited resources is the defining feature of economic systems. Therefore, we call these systems ‘econsystems.’ In an econsystem, the allocation of the limiting molecule between the competing molecules determines the behavior of the system. A cell is an example of an econsystem. Therefore, a change in the allocation of a limiting molecule as a result of, for instance, an abnormal change in the concentration of one of the competing molecules, may result in abnormal cellular behavior, and disease … this review shows that in all three cases, the allocation of the limiting molecule between the competing molecules determines the behavior of the system. We believe that these systems hold the key to some of the most important questions in biology today.” (1)

The biological systems, which include microRNAs and ligant receptors are heavily researched. In fact, more than 48,000 papers are listed on Pubmed.gov that cover issues related to microRNA. In addition, there are over 138,000 papers on the subject of ligand receptors. In contrast, the idea that latent viruses establish an econsystem with cellular genes, a relationship that is called “microcompetition” is new and under-researched.
