RUNCORN, CHESHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM, March 3, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The 10th Water and Energy Exchange Conference (WEX Global) took place in Lisbon, Portugal between 29th February and 2nd March 2016.

Enitled “Water, Energy and an End to Waste: Winning Strategies for the Resource Revolution”, the 10th Anniversary programme of WEX Global focused on the water sector. Discussions revolved around innovation practices, particularly the widespread implementation of water reuse and the adoption of smart technologies to optimize performance in the water and wastewater treatment sectors, with the objective of leading the transition to a circular economy.

Presentations of innovative technologies took centre-stage on 1st March, when the award for Innovation was announced during the WEX Gala Dinner. The interactive Innovation forum featured short presentations by panellists, relating to innovations in the water sector. These were followed by presentations of 6 select companies commercialising new technologies for tackling various aspects of current environmental challenges, from engineering advancements to membrane innovations. The format allowed for follow-up questions, analysis and debate that involved both audience and panel.

The Panel of judges comprised experts in water and wastewater, namely Fiona Griffith, Managing Director of Isle Utilities, Frank Rogalla, Director of Innovation and Technology at aqualia, Piers Clark, Chairman of Isle Utilities and Oliver Rothschild, Chairman, Oliver Rothschild Corporate Advisors. They unanimously chose Arvia Technology's disruptive water and wastewater treatment system as this year's winner of the Forum's Innovation Award.

The WEX Innovation Forum Award was accepted by Arvia's Director of Sales, David Parocki, at the WEX Gala Dinner on 1 March 2016. He commented: “WEX Global 2016 was truly an outstanding event: not only providing a high-quality networking opportunity, but also a riveting programme that gave detailed insight into current and future environmental trends. It is clear that water scarcity and the cost of fresh water necessitate wastewater reuse across most industries. With this comes the real risk of accelerated accumulation of micro-pollutants within water networks. Arvia's ODC system and its ability to remove and destroy these compounds can play an important role in closing the loop on the sustainable water cycle.”

Panel judge Piers Clark, Chairman of Isle Utilities, commented: “Arvia have developed an innovative way of removing recalcitrant industrial pollutants from wastewater. Be it hospital waste, nuclear waste, or pharmaceutical waste they simply chew it up and remove it. However the fact that stuck with me most from their presentation was that Ibuprofen passes through conventional wastewater treatment processes completely untouched. This is possibly good if you are a fish with a headache, but it doesn’t seem right somehow.”

Following the awards ceremony at the Gala Dinner, David Parocki added: “To win the Innovation award at WEX Global 2016 provides recognition for the whole team as we continue with our technology development. The award was especially sweet considering the expertise and experience that was assembled within the innovations award panel.”

Headquartered in Ceshire, United Kingdom, Arvia designs, manufactures, supplies and installs tertiary or advanced wastewater treatment systems to reduce hard COD, remove colour and treat organic micro-pollutants.

Notes for editors:

Arvia Technology designs, manufactures, supplies and installs tertiary water and wastewater treatment systems that polish COD and remove colour, organic micro-pollutants, and recalcitrant organics. It is headquartered in Cheshire, United Kingdom.

The Arvia wastewater treatment process

The Arvia process combines two established treatment technologies, adsorption and electrochemical oxidation. The Organics Destruction Cell™ (ODC) at the heart of Arvia treatment systems comprises an electrochemical cell and Nyex™, which is a non-porous and adsorbent proprietary material.

It is the extraordinary properties of graphene-like Nyex that facilitate the two phases of organic wastewater treatment in the ODC:

1. Adsorption - Nyex's surface properties attract oils and organics in the feed stream, which adhere onto the material's outer surface, removing them from the solution

2. Destruction - By passing an electric current through the ODC, oxidation of the adsorbed organics converts them into carbon dioxide and water.
As the adsorption and mineralization processes occur continuously, the Nyex is simultaneously regenerated and reused, providing simple robust treatment of the required standard.
