Study says pacifiers may help breast-feeding: No more nipple confusion
Baby will have no problem holding onto their pacifier
IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO, USA, February 16, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- According to latest research, pacifiers may promote breast-feeding. This is contrary to the commonly held belief that pacifiers interfere with a baby’s breast-feeding.A pacifier lock-down was implemented by Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher Children’s Hospital to further improve their breast-feeding record. The results, however, were surprising as instead of improving their breast-feeding record, the saw the rates of breast-feeding drop as soon as the pacifiers were locked up.
Carrie Phillipi, medical director of the Mother-Baby Unit of the hospital and an associate professor of pediatrics, said that pacifiers don’t always have a negative impact on breast-feeding.
Phillipi shared that when they cleared pacifiers from routine distribution, they did not see the improvements they had expected. The feeding behavior of 2,249 babies born in the hospital between the months of June 2010 and August 2011 were observed and the data collected from the research were studied by Phillipi and another resident in pediatrics, Laura Kair.
Before the lock-down, around 80% of babies were exclusively breastfed. The number went down to around 70% after the pacifier lock-down.
Neonatologist John McDonald was not surprised with the research results. McDonald stated that when the relationship between breast-feeding and pacifiers is taken into consideration, the level of scientific proof does not actually support a negative effect on exclusive breast-feeding and pacifier use.
