The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) is hosting a joint FDF NFU fringe open event at this year's Labour Party Conference titled, 'How do we best develop a National Food Strategy for the UK'. At the event, FDF's Director General Ian Wright will set out what food and drink producers need from Government's Food and Farming 25-year Plan in order to maximise their competitiveness and grow sustainably.

The event brings together panellists Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Angela Smith MP, NFU President Meurig Raymond MBE and FDF Director General Ian Wright CBE. Julia Glotz, Managing Editor of The Grocer, will chair the discussion.

Ian Wright, Director General of FDF, said: “UK food and drink is a world leading industrial sector and outstanding national asset. Food and drink has shown itself to be a self-help sector and major contributor to the UK economy. However, there is huge untapped potential. With more targeted focus from Government, we can offer so much more in terms of export growth, skills development and innovation.

“Food producers are the indispensable link between primary producers and the food that is sold by UK retailers, in restaurants, and increasingly exported around the world. Farmers and food producers share many issues, not least how to remain competitive in tough markets and how to feed a growing population in the UK and abroad in a sustainable way. We need a national food strategy to unlock huge shared value through greater collaboration and cross-government policy alignment to meet the needs of the sector and society.

“As Government develops its Food and Farming 25-year Plan, food chain partners must clearly articulate what we need to continue to provide safe, nutritious and affordable food and drink and boost our productivity. At this event we will debate the ingredients for a flourishing and sustainable food and drink industry.“

Date and time: Tuesday 29 September, 18.00 – 20.00 Location: Sandringham Suite, The Queens Hotel, 1-3 Kings Road, Brighton, BN1 1NS
