SFDF/FDF position statement on a deposit return scheme
Mary Lawton, Policy and Industry Liaison Manager, at SFDF said: “We strongly support moves to improve packaging recycling and reduce littering. Our members are already playing their part through for example their support for the Courtauld Commitment and their work with organisations such as Keep Britain Tidy and Keep Scotland Beautiful on a range of voluntary initiatives.
“In our view the best way to boost national recycling rates and tackle litter is through industry working in partnership with national Governments, local authorities and others to build on existing infrastructure for household recycling services and on-the-go collection points.
“We believe a deposit return scheme is costly for both business and consumers, undermines existing recycling schemes and does not produce the benefits for recycling and litter reduction.
“This is the basis of the alternative proposal put forward by the Packaging Recycling Group Scotland of which SFDF is a member. “
