Stockton—Antonio C. 'Tony' Amador, a challenger in the race for California’s 9th District Congressional seat, praised New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for ordering a 21-day quarantine as a precaution to protect the public’s health against a deadly disease.
“Finally, someone is willing to step up and make a decision,” Amador said. “People are anxious because President Obama and Ebola Czar Ron Klain have remained silent. Once again, Obama is demonstrating a lack of leadership by not having a public policy to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus. The American public wants answers and direction. If you are going to appoint an Ebola Czar, better tell him it’s time to show up for work.”
Amador, a former U.S. Marshal, said prevention measures are necessary. “This is one decision we can’t afford to take lightly or be wrong about. Gov. Christie understands the concept that it’s better to be safe than sorry. Why can’t the president?”
From the beginning of the Ebola outbreak, there has been a lack of communication or misinformation,” said Amador. “With concerns about public perception and civil rights, the White House seems to have its priorities out of order. New York’s decision to move away from precautionary measures is an example of political correctness, not leadership.”
“Until more facts are known, it seems preventative measures make a great deal of sense,” Amador said. “Clearly Obama is uncertain what his policy should be.”
Amador said the president has refused to implement travel bans, but yet calls out the National Guard. He keeps the CDC leadership in place while it issues new Ebola guidelines on prevention. The inconsistencies are endless. And, where is our Congressman, Jerry McNerney in all this? He’s AWOL.”
“Obama and McNerney are more concerned about public perception than controlling the disease,” Amador said. “The federal government needs to implement a common sense approach.”
Amador added that his opponent Rep. Jerry McNerney should have been on the phone to Obama urging him to implement an expanded travel ban and 21-day quarantine of travelers from Ebola “hot zones” in West Africa.
For the past several weeks, Amador has called for tighter travel restrictions to slow the spread of the Ebola virus and a change in leadership at the CDC with the resignation of Tom Frieden.
“McNerney continues to blindly support Obama’s position at every turn,” said Amador. “McNerney voted 98% of the time in support of Obama throughout his eight years in office. It’s time for new leadership nationally and here at home.”
